Bookend

It’s been a year since I have posted… I’ve managed to stay out of the hospital… have overcome pain and numbness from a herniated C5/C6 disc via physical therapy and acupuncture… have expanded my knitting… have been taking photos, alias have not posted them…

In the meantime, I am finding myself more and more disappointed with major parts of the world… both globally and locally… the light I do see comes from the likes of Pope Francis and the Dalai Lama…

In college, at the UofA, I spent a lot of time hanging out at the St Thomas More Newman Center. Sitting, thinking, drawing, praying… While I’d have long discussions with a few of the Dominicans, my faith has always been something primarily private. I choose to keep it private as I find many have a tendency to use their religion against others, to judge them while exhaulting themselves… just as the Pharisee of Luke 18:9-14… that is something I don’t agree with… that said, my faith is a strong part of my life and perhaps it is time to start sharing it…

“Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you.” – Luke 7:37-38

Navy Lending Library for Navy Dependents

In January of this year I did a presentation for GrotonSOSA explaining how Navy dependents can sign up to use the Navy’s Online Lending Library to get books for their kindles and other electronic reading devices… I thought it might be helpful if I also posted that information here.

Personal update…

It was recently pointed out to me that I’m delinquent in posting to my blog…

My New Years Resolution this year was to “stay out of the hospital” Continue reading “Personal update…”

Windows 7 to Windows 10 Upgrade with SSD

I recently upgraded my Windows 7 desktop to Windows 10 and was VERY frustrated with how slow programs opened and would fail to respond once they were opened… turns out somewhere in the upgrade, SuperFetch and Prefetch got re-enabled on my SSD.

SuperFetch and Prefetch are Windows Storage Management technologies that provide fast access to data on traditional hard drives by trying to predict and preload applications… On Solid State Drives they really are not needed and just end up in excessive writes to the drive…

SuperFetch is easily disabled using the Service Manager (services.msc). Simply scroll down to the SuperFetch service and change the start up to Disabled and click on Apply.

To disable Prefetch, run the Registery Editor (regedit) and Navigate to: HKLM \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Memory Management \ PrefetchParameters

Double-click on EnablePrefetcher in the right side to open its DWORD value box.

The possible values for EnablePrefetcher are:

  • 0 – Disable Prefetcher
  • 1 – Application launch Prefetching enabled
  • 2 – Boot Prefetching enabled
  • 3 – Application launch and Boot Prefetching enabled

The default value is 3. To disable Prefetch, set it to 0. Click OK and Exit.

Things seem much more efficient now…
